In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his term.

A Historic Figure

The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Defying counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
