Each time a major prize-giving event approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
