The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

He is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. Lula was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
