Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying such drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
