RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
